Maine Central Station - Quebec Junction

Railroad - 7 - Maine Central Station - Quebec Junction - 6-29-1933

Tiny sent in this interesting picture which he describes as the MEC line on the left which goes to Whitefield, NH and is open for traffic to Conway, NH.
The rail line on the right goes to a wye near Jefferson, NH and continues straight through to Groveton, NH, and east to Gorham, NH. In the picture, the two rail on the right are still there, but you would never know it today. Trees forty feet high have grown up between the rails! Tiny added that it was to bad he could not have found that sooner, it would have been great for his motorcar.
Thanks again to Denneth 'tiny' Lee for a great picture from the past.

August is a busy month at MGRS

Two Open Houses and three special Charity Events are scheduled for August 2009.

Maine Garden Railway Society has a lot going on and you are encouraged to join in. Be an active member yourself and support the members that go to the effort to provide an 'Open House'. Also try to attend a special event and assist a veteran or nursing home resident to enjoy a MGRS outing.

Just Puttering Around

"Puttering" is one of my favorite things. Actually, I was digging in the dirt most of the day. In the front yard I uncovered out septic cover. I did not know where it was and decided to find it myself and then call 'the guy'. Better now then wait to winter and there is a problem.
That solved, I went out back and worked on my retaining wall addition to the railroad. It will also serve as a large addition to the flower garden area. Still to much work to be done. But I looked over and saw the little water garden and though it looked happy, so I snapped a picture.

The blog is glad to see a new member signed up as an author! Richard from Bath, Me. Congratulations and when you are ready try making your first post. Thanks Dick for signing up.
Here is a video you might like. It's the Maine Eastern coming into Bath. It's a great trip starting in Brunswick and going through Bath and Wiscaset to Rockland. A nice layover of 3 hours gives you time for lunch and looking around before catching the train for the return trip. Click Here to see video.

Maine Veterans Home Outing at MGRS

Some more frisky Maine Veterans came by to visit at a special event at MGRS today at Carl's.
They were from the Nursing Home Group and were an absolute delight! And they had 3 guides and assistants that did a great job. Kudos to the MGRS members that helped out. It took 7 of us to keep up with the Vets! Thanks to Carl, Scott, Paul, Mac, Lou, John and Dick (Richard Cosgrove from Bath, a new member that just joined Saturday.) It was a great get together and we are adding both Veteran Groups that just visited to our Newsletter Mailing List. Thanks again Veterans!

Maine Veterans Home of Scarborough visits MGRS

It was a lot of fun to see our friends from the Maine Veterans Home visit MGRS today. Several who visited before returned today and brought new people with them. Walter kept 5 trains running and sounding great at the same time he was answering questions. Carl had the train camera on and working perfectly. The hand held radios were "chattering commands" for trains as well as Golf Carts! Golf Cart rides from Carl and Scott were getting very popular! The sun was shining and lunch under the 'big tent' was great. The veterans enjoyed the trains and the beauty of the garden. Every one had a good time and the laughter and the stories were the best of all. Thank you Veterans!

Yes it was!

Yes it was an "Extravaganza"! And lots of people must be tired today, particularly Pat and Carl for all the hard work that they put in! Plus, so many other really good people helped so much! When you put it all together it turned out to be a terrific MGRS event on a beautiful sunny day.

SCGRR's Newest acquisitons,USA Trains B&M F3 with Aristocraft Revolution Control

Here is a short video, not very clear in some places, of my latest acquisitons. The Engine is USA Trains F3 and I have installed an on-board 21.5v Lio battery along with Aristocrafts new "Revolution" Control system. I have also installed a "Dallee" sound board. That will be up-graded at a later date.

Sunny July 5th

As the 4th of July weekend draws to a close the sun came out and trains were at last able to run again. I finally did my second Army decal car and finished it up on the Fourth of July. This one follows our grandson and his unit the 32 nd Transportation Co. to Bagrad AFB Base in Afghanistan. He operates a PLS (Palletized Load System) vehicle and that is pictured on the car. I decided if Iwas going to have a military train I had better come up with a caboose so I commendered a Southern Pacific search light car and painted the yellow bin brown and added a US ARMY Logo as a start. We'll see, I may want to get a regular Army caboose. Go Army

White River JCT

I remember as a kid hearing a lot about White River Junction as I traveled to Vermont every summer to visit relatives. I recently got an email from a good friend who has just travelled through the area.

Hi John,

Greetings from VT! We took the Amtrak Vermonter out of White River Junction (aka WRJ around here) to go down to Baltimore for my mom's 80th birthday. It was a pretty good trip, and this end of it was very convenient. We arrived in Baltimore about 10 minutes late, pretty good timing for a 10 hour trip. Shuttling to the airport to grab a rental car and get to our hotel less than 5 miles from the train station took another 2 hours. :-( Aieeee....

I'm attaching a few pix from the WRJ area. It was hopping busy place back in the heyday of train travel, but things are looking pretty tired around here now. The pix are a couple of modern trains, and a couple of vintage trains.
